This increases demand for air conditioning, strains electricity grids, and raises the risk of heat-related illnesses during extreme heat events. The NYC CoolRoofs program showed that reflective coatings could reduce indoor cooling needs, lower energy consumption, and extend roof lifespan. However, the benefits are most pronounced in hot climates and areas with widespread air conditioning use. In colder regions, reflective roofs may slightly reduce winter heat gain, though summer savings generally outweigh this drawback.
